What is Frontline Plus?

Frontline Plus is a topical flea and tick monthly preventative for cats and dogs and is made by Merial; a prominent veterinary medicine company. Frontline Plus lies at the head of the group of products by the Frontline group, being its most advanced flea control drug. It contains S-methoprene (an insect growth regulator that kills flea eggs and larvae), along with fipronil, an insecticide that poisons the flea and tick central nervous systems. It is a vast improvement on the previous Frontline Spray and Frontline TopSpot.

Frontline Plus is touted as being 100 per cent effective at killing adult fleas on cats and dogs within 18 hours of application. It is also 100 per cent effective against ticks in a 48-hour period. Frontline Plus is effective against all known fleas as well as the brown dog tick, the lone star tick, the American dog tick, and the deer tick. The deer tick is the main carrier of Lyme disease.

Other advantages of using the drug, besides the minimal side effects of Frontline Plus, are that one application is good for a months’ worth of protection; it is waterproof, so your dog can swim afterwards; and it is also safe for cats to use. Be aware that both kittens and pups must be at least 7 weeks old before Frontline Plus can be used on them.

Frontline Plus side effects

One of the most common side effects of using Frontline Plus is that your pet may experience some irritation on the part of the body that it is administered to; typically the shoulder blades. The irritation is generally in the form of itchiness or redness. It is important to contact your vet if the problem doesn’t go away after a few days as your pet may be allergic to one or more of the active ingredients.

Another common side effect from the application of Frontline Plus is hair loss, or thinning hair. This may only happen at the point where the medicine is administered, however, and the hair will grow back after time. Other, rarer, side effects of Frontline Plus are sickness, diarrhea, and shaking after the Frontline Plus cream has been applied. This usually pertains to an allergy to fipronil or perhaps an overdose. In either case, get your pet to a vet.

One of the most common complaints of using the drug - although not a side effect of Frontline Plus - is that the application of the cream all at once in one spot (between the shoulder blades) leaves a wet patch for some time. It is, therefore, best to administer during the nighttime so the animal doesn’t try to rub it off.
