Heartgard Plus New Zealand
Where Can I Buy Heartgard Plus in New Zealand?
Heartgard Plus is a popular dog medication for countering heartworm; a parasite that grows in the right ventricle of a dog’s heart leading to restrictive breathing and even death. It is one of the most effective heartworm meds out there and is 100 percent effective against heartworm larvae. Heartgard Plus New Zealand cannot kill adult heartworms - there are currently no meds on the market that can do this – but it can also combat hookworm and roundworm. Heartgard Plus is a prescription-only med in New Zealand although you can easily buy online with your signed prescription.
Heartgard Plus comes in tablet form, which has been produced into a beefy-flavored, chewy tablet. It is made by giant pet med firm, Merial, who also produce the group of Frontline products. It utilizes the active ingredients pyrantel and ivermectin and works very well at what it does, which is destroying the tissue of worm larvae. There is also a generic version of Heartgard Plus, Iverhart, which although cheaper than the real deal, is not as effective.
Heartgard Plus New Zealand only needs to be administered once per month during the mosquito season. The best results can be achieved by starting a month before the mosquitoes come out en-masse, continuing through to a month after. Heartgard can also be used year-round and is good to go with all breeds (including Collies) and with all sizes and weights of dog. With any strong medicine it is not a good idea to administer Heartgard Plus to pups less than seven weeks of age.
There are three different dosages of Heartgard Plus, as follows:
- Up to 11kgs - 68mcg/57mg
- 11.5kgs to 22.5kgs - 136mcg/114mg
- 23kgs to 45.5kgs - 272mcg/227mg
Those pets that weigh more than 45kgs can take a combination of meds to counter the effects of heartworm.
The most common side effects of Heartgard Plus for dogs are disorientation, sickness, and diarrhea. These are also the most obvious signs of overdosing and it can even cause blindness or death. You should call the vet immediately if you have given your dog an overdose. Heartgard Plus should be avoided in dogs that are allergic to ivermectin, the active ingredient, and should be used with caution in collies. For those dogs with existing heartworm, Heartgard Plus may not be of any use as it cannot be used to treat adult heartworms. Surgery may be needed in this case.
You can pick up Heartgard Plus New Zealand from any registered veterinary practice in New Zealand. It is a fairly expensive med although you can also pick it up online and save around 30 percent on the retail price. If you buy in bulk you can make even better savings - a 12-month supply is generally the most you can buy with any one prescription. To buy Heartgard Plus online, simply see your vet and obtain the prescription. There should be no obligation to buy from your vet at this point. When you get the prescription, fax it off to an online pharmacy along with your order.
